Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family, it was managed by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. As a young child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused by word associations. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford didn't graduate until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
